Wahoka and Greetings

It’s the start of a new year so as tribe scribe I better get the keys on the old Smith Corona fired up and report back on the latest from the Mighty Sioux!

We start the new Sioux year with the great honor of welcoming out new chief and again thanking our outgoing chief for all his great work. We welcome to the Sioux our new Braves and Princesses Rob and Bailey Captain, Brad and Megan Schumann, Steve and Samantha Hess, Frank and Tory Albers, and Chief Kerin’s forth princess Elea Kerins. Welcome all!

We ended the summer fun with the highpoint adventure of the season, our campout at Catalina Island. Sioux spirits were high as always as we boarded the great twin hulled; diesel powered canoe and crossed the vast Pacific to our Happy Camping Grounds at Twin Harbors. The Sioux camp was sprawling, immense and un-mistakable. The three coux stick holders full of brightly feathered and decorated coux sticks, the “Mighty Sioux” banner hanging where all can see it, and topping it all off, “The Mighty Sioux” flag waving in the cool Pacific wind. The center piece of the Sioux camp again was the one and only Sioux Teepee rising above the campground mesa. As usual, and as to be expected, The Sioux girls dominated in many of the nation games. Sioux girls took feathers in  the balloon toss, the obstacle course, and the fishing tournament, where they landed  fish of all sizes off the beach , the pier, and the dock on the west side of Twin Harbors. The traditional water balloon fight was a much enjoyed (rather “unofficial” event) with The Sioux sharpshooters raining aquatic terror form above onto the Mohican tribe below. They scored some pretty good return hits too though! My tent needed a good washing anyway.

An excellent Broadway level skit, worthy of a Toni award was performed by our Princesses at the Nation Campfire. Heap thanks to our own Robert Fossie in disguise aka: Dennis Arsenault for his directing and stage production input. Our own Sioux campfire is a special tradition at Catalina. In the evening we handed over the Coux stick of leadership to Jim Kerins We all owe a lot to our previous chief Mike D’Alessandro who set an amazing example of leadership and involvement in the tribe, always keeping it fun and focused on the girls.

Our new year has launched with our party at Tatonka beach (aka the power plant at Magnolia Street) where we were treated to a great feast of Carne Asada by Hunters Big Puma (Andrew Tosh) and Star Jumper (Jeff Feltch). We welcomed all the new Sioux and had a traditional ceremony fireside inducting these new Sioux with words of wisdom from the four winds whom, the East, Jason Sweet (‘Thundering winds of the West’) and the South, Jonathon Fletcher (Arrow Maker) spoke with authority and honesty which resonated in all our hearts. Moon Doggie and Daughter-apprentice Star Doggie then blessed all the inductees with Sweet Grass smoke and fanned them with eagle wings. Then Dancing Fire (Kimberly Spell) presented them with their new coup sticks to decorate with their fathers.
Lastly Water Lily (Isabella Manning) and Pocahontas White Buffalo (Sienna Kerins) recited their Aims to the Chief, received a red feather, and signed the Aims banner followed by the new Sioux branding their vests. Of course, there was the medicine man challenge and what would a Sioux beach party be without the traditional hunt for buried treasure aka: the candy box.

Looks like we’re off and running on another awesome Mighty Sioux year!….

 July 2007

Greetings and WAHOKA from the Sioux news desk. Wow, what a summer we’re having and we’re not even half way through July yet.  Before I forget, a big welcome goes out to all the new Dads and Daughters who joined the Mighty Sioux at the beach party in May. As with all the Sioux beach parties at Tatonka Beach, there was great food in abundance, a great fire ( which is , of course, a Sioux tradition), there was a spine tingling medicine man challenge or two, and another buried treasure hunt that had all the girls smiling. The entire time the Sioux flag flying proudly above us in light afternoon breezes. Thanks to all who pitched in, help set up, cook, clean up and make a fun night at the beach.

The Father Daughter dance on June 8th was another excellent event, this year with an Aloha spirit and theme. Thanks to our friends the Hakowi for hosting this memorable evening at a beautiful location. If anyone got any good pictures to share, please send them in.

A small but energetic group of Sioux came out to Halley and Billy Epperson’s teepee for a relaxing afternoon in their Sioux sized pool. It was a great way to spend an afternoon, very relaxing, floating around the pool with a nice breeze, some pretzels and an awesome Ranch dip.  Heap big thanks to them for their hospitality and we enjoyed the cannonball / tidal demonstration put on by some of the Sioux dad’s whose identities will remain concealed.

July has started off with its appropriate patriotic theme with our awesome 4th of July Parade march. The Sioux tactical squad scored a great spot on the Main Street grassy median  to put up three Sioux EZ up , enough to accommodate most of the tribe their families, friends and of course the food and drinks! Our most brave and excellent chief Mike D decked out in his parade best duds in full feather head dress led the Sioux and the entire nation  for that matter at the head of the parade. Sioux spirit ran deep with all the girls and some dads face painting the crowd and themselves. Jim Kerins gets the strong man award pulling a Coup stick and Lance decorated wagon usually with a princesses or two riding along.

That’s all for now, Mural making at the Fletchers and wax your boards Sioux Surf camp is on the horizon!

 May 2007

Hello my fellow brothers in the Sioux and the Great Nation,

Sioux spirit is amazing, limitless, and quite contagious. The fire of Sioux excitement is so hot I can’t wait for the end of the month for the newsletter. I still haven’t unpacked from Spring camp but even before that we get to that we must report on the most unique and extraordinary event, the Princesses of the Caribbean Cruise held on a beautiful Sunday in Newport Harbor. Six (Duffy) boat-loads of Princesses and their Scallywag dads plowed the high seas of Newport Harbor in search of treasures for the scavenger hunt. Yar, these landlubbers coming ashore on Fletcher’s Island to dig for buried treasure (aka; candy in the amo box) buried deep in the sands. All the girls and dads came away with cool t-shirts, skull and bones bandanas, and some of the biggest smiles and best memories of an amazing day on the water. Big yo ho ho  and a bottles of rum to Buccaneer Brad for arranging the Harbor Patrol to give a big Sioux welcome with their fireboats and trying to sink Captain Ely’s vessel, but I’ll leave the details for another time. Thanks as always to our Chief (who look’s great in pirate garb, Erol Flynne ain’t got nothin’ on Mike D.) Big ups to Jon Ely, Brad and of course Jon Fletcher for the use of some of Newport’s most exclusive real estate to dock our pirate ships.

2007 SPRINGCAMP, which was hosted by the Mighty Sioux, was beyond incredible. The weather was great, the wind blew, the fish were biting and the catered food was excellent. Early on Saturday morning the beach was filled with Sioux girls and dads testing the waters of the bay for the fishing contest. Bat rays, Bay Bass, and all kinds of whoppers were landed by our girls. Lunch was followed by some great Nation games with dads and daughters smiling all the way. The tribal fire was all time, only singed the first two rows this year! Prior to the fire the night was kicked off with a rocket launch thanks to Jim Kerins. The Sioux faired well in the games and won many of the awards that night, with a few girls getting blue feathers for their aims. The Sioux also arranged nightly fireworks shows in co-op with our friends at Seaworld. Sunday started off with more fishing (a few raindrops) and a great breakfast up on the hill. A great weekend and an adventure our Sioux girls will always cherish.

March 2007

Wahoka Mighty Sioux!

Whoever thought February was a slow month never hung out with the Mighty Sioux.

With the fun of Winter Camp still fresh in our memories, the Mighty Sioux rolled into the second month of 2007 with another fun filled calendar of great activities. Kicked off with an evening of thrills and challenges at CLIMB X , hosted by Steve and Stephanie Katz. The Sioux girls showed their strength, coordination and true Sioux bravery scaling he rock walls of CLIMB X . Constantly defying gravity and stretching out to ring the bells only inches from the ceiling of the building. Heap Big thanks to Running River and Rainbow Star for hosting a great event.

The big event for Feb was of course the annual Pinewood Derby which had great participation form all the Nation tribes but the Sioux were their in force, wearing their standout colors and vests proudly!  The first Annual Pinewood “Monster Garage” was held the week before at Lucy O’Connell’s house where so many Sioux Dads brought their tools and race secrets to share with everyone, thus insuring complete Sioux domination.

Sioux Princesses swept some major categories including the alumni class , 1st grade and K with strong showings in the other classes picking up trophies for speed originality and best Indian . Congratulations to all our Princesses for their fast driving skills( Nice work too, Dads!) Congratulations and welcome again to all the new Dads and Princesses who enjoyed the Derby as their first Nation event.

Stay tuned as always for more updates as the Mighty Sioux move into a super busy Spring Season starting Sunday with the Princesses of the Carribbean –See ya’ all there!!

February 2007

Wahoka Mighty Sioux!

Despite the cold winds of winter blowing through Orange County, the Mighty Sioux charged ahead with their typical enthusiasm and high energy spirit. January was indeed a fun packed month starting off with an evening of miniature golf hosted by Olivia and Ray Toohey. More than 30 Princesses daughters and their Dads came out on a brisk evening to challenge the links at Boomers. Their athletic efforts were rewarded with treats and juice boxes after the 18th hole. Many a “hole is one” was shouted, along with “hey, where’d the ball go?”

Following the Boomers adventure, we enjoyed another super Sioux special event evening at the HB heliport hosted by Dayna, Makaela and Dave Wiederin. Heap thanks to the brave and daring pilots of the HBPD who took the time from their crime fighting schedule to open up their hanger and show the Mighty Sioux their awesome facility - complete with a flying demonstration including searchlights and sirens - of course! The girls got to talk with the pilots, sit in the helicopters and get a tour of HBPDs new mobile command post. There were looks of amazement on the faces of the girls as the helicopter took off and performed its aerodynamic dance. After such an exhilarating experience the Sioux were treated to refreshing ice cream cones at the local Baskin Robbins. What away to end a great night of fun.

And the grand finale to any January on the GHV calendar is, of course, Wintercamp. The lack of snow in camp this year didn’t diminish the fun as the Sioux engaged all the activities with their usual “go for it” attitude. The Mighty Sioux showed up en force and occupied over four cabins at the luxurious Camp Mountain Chai in beautiful Big Bear. We wore with pride all our new Sioux fashion gear consisting of t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts, (which came in very handy as the temps were not exactly tropical!) Each Sioux cabin was proudly decorated with colorful Coup sticks (a Sioux exclusive) and some beautiful and inspirational banners brought by Jim Mulligan and Jim Kerins. There was no doubt where the Sioux were! Sioux pride was loud and clear as usual.

Saturday was a non stop day of adventure following a hearty breakfast in the dining hall. We hit the newly remodeled tubing area in downtown Big Bear where the girls all wore huge smiles as they raced down the mountain slopes. The “Sioux Chain” was invented as ten or twelve girls would link arms and legs and plummet down the snow covered run - laughing all the way of course. That afternoon the Nation Games saw huge Sioux participation in all events from the obstacle course to the Frisbee toss. The evenings highlight was the thunderous entrance of the Mighty Sioux led by Chief Mike into the lodge. With Coup sticks a thumpin’ on the floor, and girls and dads screaming their heads off, it was indeed a charged moment. The Sioux picked up many awards for their victories in the nation game and were the only tribe to have three of its Princesses receive their red feathers for reciting their aims. Way to go Sioux! The Mighty Sioux stole the show with their almost ready for Broadway adaptation of “High Sioux Musical” performance which was led by our choreographer and always inspirational chief Mike D’Alessandro.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Mighty Sioux move ahead through the year…

December 2006

Wahoka Great Hunting Valley!

Greetings and Happy Holidays! May the Peace and Happiness of all good spirits be with you and your families this Holiday Season.

Wow!  What a great 2006 it was, and 2007 looks to be packed with even more excellent, not to miss Sioux and Nation events. As this was Lucy and my first year with the Sioux, a heap big thanks to Chief  Mike, Jon Ely, Brad and everyone else for the great leadership and energy they provide in making this tribe the absolute best in the GHV. Also, a great big SIOUX welcome to all the new princesses and braves who have made the “wise” decision to join our great tribe.

Let’s do a quick recap from the past months’ activities to wrap up a busy year and get ready for an awesome 2007. We had an evening packed with fun at the Tandy Leather store, where the girls made some really cool (and quite useful) change purses featuring tooled and stamped leather decorations. The Sioux joined the Nation on a beautiful and chilly evening for the first ever cruise around Huntington Harbor to view the Holiday Lights. The theme this year was “Music for All Ages”. Hot chocolate and great conversation kept everyone warm as we passed by all the brilliant lighting and imaginative Holiday displays on the harbor homes and boats.

The Sioux year’s events ended with a culinary adventure in Pizza making at Roundtable Pizza where the girls made their own pizzas and enjoyed all the arcade games. Big thanks to Jim Mulligan and Jimmy Carroll for hosting these great events. Likewise a much deserved “Thank You” to Sioux Members Dave Weiderin, Jim Kerins, and Jon Ely for their involvement in sponsoring some Military families in the area. Several thousands of dollars were raised to help local families of servicemen and women during this Holiday Season. Nice job guys!

Happy Holidays everyone and see ya next year!!

October 2006

Wahoka Great Hunting Valley!

As we turn the corner on a great summer and head into a busy fall, the MIGHTY SIOUX have been heap busy since our great adventure to Catalina Island (See Photos).

With our regular tribe get-togethers that kicked off with a beach party featuring leather vest branding, a buried treasure hunt and some amazing BBQ ribs. Thanks Dave and Dennis! Then a “Sioux Only” night at Brewbakers, where over 70 dads and their princess daughters made personalized pretzels and made some delicious root beer. In mid October there was the GHV Nation picnic at HB Central Park where the girls gave away Sioux Tatoos and sold “Sandy Candy” to the crowds. The high point was the induction of 6 new princesses to the Sioux tribe. Welcome New Sioux Princesses! Next was a very special Friday night sleepover at the Long Beach aquarium hosted by the Hopi. The SIOUX finished a scavenger hunt and had a great time discovering new sea life, being thrilled by the 3D movie (…remember that giant snake everyone?) and sleeping next to sharks and jellyfish at the Tropical Pacific tanks . Yikes! And finally a great afternoon at the Discovery Science Center where the Mighty Sioux prepared for Halloween with a Spooky Science event. Heap thanks to DSC curator, Leslie Perovich (friend of the Sioux) for the private tour and goodie bags. The Sioux princesses completed the dinosaur mission, searched for the legendary Chupacabra’s, played virtual volleyball, and showed their rock climbing skills.

That’s all for now, time to catch our breath and get ready for a terrific and fun filled November.

See ‘ya then!

September 2006

Wahoka,

What a great way to close out the year (and start my first “official” duties as Sioux Tribe Scribe) with an unbelievably awesome Catalina camping adventure. But before we get to the Nation event, we must mention the one of a kind tribe meeting held at Jim Kerin’s home, where the Sioux held their regular meeting in his authentic 28 foot teepee. The girls were treated to some great hot dogs, swimming, and entertainment by an authentic Soux dancer.

Now, onto the big weekend. The excitement gathered Friday on the pier waiting to board the Catalina Express and didn’t subside until Sunday afternoon when the big blue boat landed back at the Balboa dock.  The Sioux were at their typical busy best all weekend long, setting up camp with two the tribal banners, a beautiful new flag, and that amazing teepee put up by Jim Kerins, (…hand carried onto the boat by Sioux tribe teamwork!).  It was a special Sioux campfire Friday night as the leadership role of chief was passed from Jon Ely to Mike D’Assandro.  Jon was honored with a special plaque and received many a congratulations for the terrific job he did and his inspirational leadership.  Saturday morning stared bright and early with many girls and dads throwing their lines in the beautiful blue water to catch some of the multitude of fish that Catalina offers.  After being inducted “decorated” as chief on the beach Saturday afternoon, Mike immediately assumed his new role and led the group of over 40 Sioux girls chanting to the Nation campfire.  Awards went out to many of the Sioux girls marking their anniversaries and their other achievements.  Sunday started bright and early with more fishing, climbing trees, hanging out and helping (watching) Dad pack up the campsites getting ready for the dash back to Newport.

Stay tuned for more news from the Mighty Sioux!  Don’t miss the upcoming Sioux tribe induction beach party on Friday Sept 29th.  Come and get your vest branded on the fire.

See you then!

July 2006

Wahoka GHV!

It’s been an active fun-filled spring for the Mighty Sioux. In March the Sioux gathered at the Kompara teepee for a leather coup stick picture frame making party. Next, Trevor and Jordan Neves hosted a tribe party at Pump-it-Up. The Sioux princesses jumped and ran their way through the maze recording their best time trials. Sioux princesses stomped their feet and do-si-do’d their partners at the annual square dance. Also, Heep thanks to Chief Ely for his efforts in organizing a fun-filled spring camp. A great time was had by all. Over 50 Sioux participated in one of the best spring camps in nation history. The Sioux showed their competitive spirit winning many awards during the nation games.

The 2nd Annual YMCA Princess / Guides Golf Classic was a huge success. Heap thanks to all who participated. Approximately $9,000 was raised for the GHV Princess programs with some of the proceeds allocated for participating tribes. The Sioux kicked off the Memorial Day weekend with the semi-annual beach party. New Sioux had their vests branded with the tribal logo. Next, Jonathan and Emily Fletcher hosted a mural making party. A large banner was made by laying princesses and objects on photo sensitive cloth, then exposing it to the sun. In addition, each princess made their very own custom bandanas.

An end of the school year pool party was held at the D’Alessandro teepee. The Sioux mermaid princesses swam and took turns riding in the golf cart around the neighborhood. The nation spirit was strong as the Sioux marched with the GHV and GCN tribes in the 102nd Annual July 4th Huntington Beach parade. A few other tribal events will be held this summer including Sioux day at the Orange County Fair and a Sioux surf day at the beach.

The Sioux would like to wish heep fun and safety to all in the GHV over the summer.

February 2006

Wahoka Everyone!!!

The Sioux finished off 2005 with a visit to Brewbakers to make some SiouxBrew rootbeer.  The Sachem Spell girls hosted this mob scene with the girls making pretzels, rolling the barrel, eating pizza, and lots of drinking…rootbeer of course.

In early January, the Jimmy and Anna Carroll hosted the Sioux at Lamppost Pizza where the girls made their own pizzas for them and their dads commiserated over SC’s loss the night before.  Heep delicious.  Next, Shannon and Hayes hosted a Sioux skateboard party at Volcom Skate Park.  Future X-Games boarder Shannon showed everyone her stuff while dads Scott Pennington and Chris Beck performed in the SoupBowl.

Next up in January was Winter Camp which was at the spectacular new Camp Cedar Lake.  Dads and daughters had a great weekend sledding and hanging out together in the pines.  At the Nation campfire Saturday night, the girls brought home the coveted Sprit Award.

For the first Wednesday after winter camp, GHV Medicine Man Dave W and daughters Makayla and Dayna invited the tribe to HB’s heliport for a police chopper demonstration.  An added surprise was the new S.W.A.T. armored personnel carrier which the girls thoroughly enjoyed followed by Baskin Robbins.

Sawdust was sure flying at Paige and Garth Tamblyns’ garage a couple of nights before the Pinewood Derby.  It was a last chance for the girls and dads to mold that chunk of pine into a work of racing art.  And as for the Pinewood Derby, the Sioux girls were very spirited, cheering on their racers.  And as for the races…America’s Tribe was fast, very fast…taking First Place in Grades K thru Alumni and sweeping 1st thru 3rd place in Grades 1 and 2, as well as numerous awards for Most Indian and Most Original.

November 2005

Wahoka GHV Nation!!!!!

October and November were busy months for the Mighty Sioux as we kicked off the new year of activities.  Our first meeting was the annual beach tribal induction party under the mighty tatonka horns of the HB power plant.  The girls searched for and found the treasure buried by our ancient Sioux ancestors, ate the revered popped maize, branded leather vests and welcomed our newest members to the mightiest of tribes.

At the Nation Induction Picnic, the girls made heep wampum by selling Sandy Candy to the other tribes....it is debatable whether the girls ate more candy than they sold....but either way they had a blast.  With Halloween looming, the D'Allesandro's hosted an afternoon of spooky adventure at the Discovery Center where the girls learned about wolves and did crazy experiments...some of them even laid on a bed of nails and lived to tell about it.

In November, the girls journeyed to ClimbX for some rock wall climbing hosted by the Katz's....no injuries but heep fun reported.  November closed out with two events - Nation Bumper Bowling (congrats to the Spell girls and others for their wins) and a visit to the sacred Sioux stomping grounds of the Kerin's backyard where the girls bonded beside the fire within the authentic 30-foot teepee and made a Sioux spear embossed with their names.

More to come in December.....

September 2005

Wahoka Great Hunting Valley Nation!!!!!

Americas Tribe would like to introduce four new families who joined the Mighty Sioux at the Two Harbors Catalina Indian Princess Campout in early September.  Chris and Jamie Beck, Jonathan and Emily Fletcher, Scott and Taylor Pennington and Garth and Paige Tamblyn were all in attendance, along with 41 other Sioux braves and princesses.  A hearty Wahoka and Welcome Aboard to all these new members, with special kudos to Chris and Scott for their outstanding efforts in the kayak relay race.  While the Sioux did not actually win the race (due to reasons we won’t elaborate on here in the interests of keeping the peace) our braves’ performances were certainly memorable.

Even more memorable were the performances of our princesses in the Nation Games and Fishing Derby.  Sioux Girls won most of the awards (including farthest toss) in the Frisbee Contest, casted admirably in the accuracy competition and dominated the Fishing Derby with Largest Catch and collected almost all the hardware in that event.  Props to all the girls for once again showing the Nation why we are known as “The Mighty Sioux”.

Other highlights of the trip included water balloon fights with the Shawnee, Hopi and Navajo, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and just exploring the hills, canyons and beaches in the surrounding area.

Thanks to the Mohicans for hosting this hugely successful and enjoyable campout.  It was a great kickoff to the “new year” and we are looking forward to the upcoming Tribal and Nation events and activities.

Sioux Hosts Spring Camp & Luau at Cabrillo

Sioux Organizes 1st Annual Y Princesses/Guides Golf Classic

Sioux Makes Own Pizza

Spring Camp - The Spring Camp site was perfect and it was only 30 minutes drive away which brought out an IP Spring Camp record 135 attendees.  Besides the camp director creature known as "Ma", things went well and the girls and dads had heep fun!  The pool was refreshing, the food was good, and so was the luau dance show.  Some classic moments included the Sioux canoe flipping over and sinking in the nation canoe race (with our own St. Laurent and Knorr ultimately being rescued by the lifeguard boat), the Sioux girls were truly mighty by trouncing the competition in all three of the Nation Games (24 of 45 awards) a Tug 'O War victory, and we all got to witness Sachem Brad Spell’s latest fire pit explosion.

Golf Tournament - The Sioux’s hard work paid off with a very fun and smoothly run tournament.  Big thanks and congratulations go out to the Sioux's Golf Committee: Mike D'Allesandro (Golf Chair), Doug Van Mullem, Dave Wiederin, and Brad Spell.  Thanks also to Leo Heydorff for arranging the Cadillac Escalade Hole-in-One contest and last but not least Annie, Tayna, Amanda and Laval with the Y. Congratulations to the team consisting of Spell, St. Laurent, and Kompara for winning the "spirit" trophy for HIGHEST score.  There were great raffle prizes and a lot of people won something.  The biggest winners in Sioux were Billy Epperson who won a stay at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach and Ray Toohey who couldn't carry all the stuff he won….and Ray Woolsey won the wazoo Spanish-made pellot gun Chief Fuzzy Bear really wanted.  The Sioux fielded 26 golfers...36% of the 72 players.  Combine this with the showing of 50 Sioux at Cabrillo (37% of 135) and there's a strong tribe!  It was a busy Spring for the Sioux – did some things out of the box - and we can be proud of the results.

Pizza Making - In May, Anna and Jimmy Carroll hosted pizza making at Lamppost Pizza.  The girls got to make their own pizza and it was great.  A wopping 32 Sioux girls including some new recruits showed up for the event and all had a great time!

April 2005

WAHOKA GREAT HUNTING VALLEY NATION!!!!!

The Mighty Sioux have been heap busy since last report and have several new members we would like to introduce to the nation.  Olivia and Ray Toohey, Kate and Dermot O’Doherty, and Taylor and Denis Arsenault are all welcome additions to Americas Tribe and have already attended multiple Indian Princess functions.

February started out with a unique outing to Pearsons Port, a neighborhood institution in Newport Beach that has been selling fresh seafood dockside for many decades.  River Star and River Rock (John and Allison Jinkins) hosted the event where the girls were treated to a “hands on” introduction to all kinds of fish, crab and other shellfish. Many of the specimens were alive and kicking, and one even bit the gal while doing her demonstration, drawing oohs and aahs from the princesses.  Thanks for a fun and educational afternoon.

America’s Tribe once again led the way at the annual Pinewood Derby, thanks to the efforts of the Ely Girls (Lauren and Megan) and many other Sioux girls who helped show the nation why we are also called “Americas Fastest Tribe”.  Chief Fuzzy Bear’s daughters had the fastest overall times of the day, and others in our tribe were right behind them.  Good Job Girls!!!!!

Rainbow Star, Purple Shooting Star and White Ankle (the Wiederin Family) hosted the next tribal outing on March 2nd at the Joint Powers Fire Training Center on Gothard. The princesses got to see a  helicopter demonstration (and climb around in one), see trainees repel the tower using various methods, hold and spray a fire hose and learn how to use the rescue basket.  This has become an annual event the girls really enjoy. Thanks for another great outing (and the trip to 31 Flavors afterwards).

Two weeks later found the girls and their braves at the home of Sienna, Katherine and Jim Kerins for a traditional outdoor meeting complete with fire and storytelling.  The princesses crafted unique necklaces and were presented with gifts from the daughters of our Medicine Man and spiritual leader, a practice that is customary in South Dakota, the ancestral home of the Sioux.

Many thanks to the Shawnee for hosting one of the girls’ favorite events (the annual square dance) on the 18th.

Don’t forget to sign up for Spring Camp (4-29) and the Golf Tourney (5-13) if you have yet to do so.  The Mighty Sioux are counting on you!

February 2005

WAHOKA GREAT HUNTIN VALLEY NATION!!!!!

January was yet another Siouxper month for Americas Tribe, beginning with a tribal outing to the archery range on the 5th hosted by the Stevens Family.  18 princesses showed up to test their skills, while being coached and entertained by the more than helpful “teacher” Frank.  The girls had no problem hitting the apples and other targets, and the cupcakes served afterward didn’t stand a chance either.

At least that many princesses made it up to Camp Big Bear two days later, and considering they had to “brave” the Storm of the Decade, that was no small accomplishment.  Americas Tribe was once again awarded the coveted Spirit Award, and collected more than their fair share of other hardware at the awards ceremony Saturday evening. New Year… Same Story.  Constructing a SiouxGloo, many snowmen and an epic sled run (complete with launching pad) were other trip highlights.

New members Alyssa (Flower Girl Sunshine) and Neil (King Trout) Sodell were welcomed to the tribe on the 19th at a roller skating party hosted by Will and Shannon Hayes.  Too bad the Thunderbirds left town, as some of the girls looked good enough to go pro.  Hats off to Pretty Princess and Thunder Foot for setting up a fun (and injury free!) outing.

America’s Tribe has been heap busy organizing and promoting the upcoming First Annual “Golf Classic” on April 4th.  Please sign up ASAP (ghv.org) if you have yet to do so.  It will be a blast and will help the G.H.V.N. get back into black ink.

January 2005

WAHOKA G.H.V.N.!!!!!

Americas Tribe has been heap busy the past several weeks, but before we get to that, let’s welcome some new members to the ranks of the Mighty Sioux. Doug Van Mullem and his daughters Hannah and Victoria and Barrett Westover and his daughter are all welcome additions and have already attended multiple Sioux outings.

Many thanks to Little Bear, Running Bear and Crazy Bear (Aubrey, Nicole and Rick St. Laurent) for hosting a great meeting at the Huntington Beach Fire Station on Gothard.  The girls got to climb inside the fire truck, check out all the gear, and hear stories from the guys on duty.  Despite a couple of injuries sustained in the ensuing parking lot snack-fest/play-time, a great time was had by all.

Next up was the traditional pre-holiday “make your mom a Christmas present” excursion to the Color Me Mine Ceramic Studio downtown.  This meeting, hosted by Katherine and Chris Lewis, went off without a hitch. Seeing a former Chief (who shall remain nameless) help himself to the Brie and vegetable plate brought by an adjoining party of women provided comic relief for the braves in attendance. Thanks to Snuggle Bunny and Huggy Bear for a great meeting and delicious snacks.

Jon Kompara and daughters Becca and Katie threw the next Sioux get together at Brewbakers in early December. This meeting is always a favorite and well attended, as the princesses love making pretzels and root beer and the dads enjoy watching them (and consuming various snacks and beverages.) Hats off to the Komparas!

Although few Sioux attended the Annual Holiday Party, the ones who did represented the tribe admirably by decorating Chief Fuzzy Bear in lights and paper head to toe (complete with goofy elf hat and shoes). He was clearly the best and brightest snowman in the bunch, but the judges gave 1st place to another tribe (We Wuz Robbed!!!!!)  Many thanks to the Cheyenne for hosting the party, where the girls took photos with Santa, decorated cookies, and sang Christmas karaoke songs.

Looking forward to a great 2005,

Noonway,

Greg/Vanessa Stevens
