Winter Camp 2007

Greetings!

Congratulations to the princesses and big braves of the Mohican tribe!  All contributed to a great and fun Winter Camp.

THE MOHICANS WON THE NATION SPIRIT AWARD! Heap Good. A complete tribal effort.

The SPIRIT AWARD was based on relative improvement, and our tribe grew from eight committed families to 21 committed families by Winter Camp. The GHV Nation added a new badge of recognition for recruiting, and I handed these out after the Nation Awards Ceremony at Winter Camp. Mohicans who earned this award for recruiting new members are Ragged Hunter (one family), Golden Bear (two families), Soaring Eagle (four families) and myself (two families). But we're not done - give a Heap Big welcome to our newest Mohicans, Wapoos & Dancing Star. 22 families and growing!

Many big braves helped out in ways big and small. Climbing Tortoise led the Scavenger Hunt for the tribe & the Mohicans completed the Hunt (we had some problems with a pink hairbrush, but some big braves came up with a "work around"). The girls had great fun, particularly when it came to painting the chief's face - all they had was toothpaste. On the way to show the Big Chief proof of their work, they paraded me through 6 or 7 other cabins - heap big fun - for the princesses! Warchief Grey Muskrat handed out the new, brightly colored T - shirts and sweatshirts (and collected wampum) that the Mohicans wore for the first time. Medicine Man Charging Caterpillar came up with a very funny - and easy to practice skit that was great. We had a good Medicine Man challenge, fun at the tube run & a nice hike where the princesses fed birds from their hands, much of which Chief Grizzled Bear recorded on his digital cave painting machine. The Mohicans enjoyed meeting new friends in other tribes, some bearing candy! The Mohicans especially appreciated the skit, Hi Sioux Musical, where all the chiefs and their princesses were recognized as all belonging to ONE NATION.

Most Mohican princesses competed in many of the events and received lots of encouragement and hugs from their big brave. The event competitions are an important part of the princess program. The events are structured from camp out to camp out to give a wide variety of girls a chance to win. (2nd grader) Seal Rider had the FASTEST time in the nation in the obstacle- Heap Good, Seal Rider!

The Mohicans thank the Mighty Kaw for a wonderful Winter Camp full of fun, time together and laughter.

November 2006

Greetings from the Mohicans!

On a cool, windy September evening, in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, a Great Blue Heron stood perched in the shallows while a flock of ducks swam by. Had the Great Blue Heron looked over, it would have seen Chief Talking Bear handing over his war bonnet to his Warchief, Grizzled Bear. Likewise, it would have seen Talking Bear's daughter, Princess Golden Blossom, handing over her war bonnet to Princess Ice Cream Bear.

Talking Bear, now a tribal elder, or sachem, would now watch as Chief Grizzled Bear assembled the princesses for his first time and took them on a walk of the wetlands, where they would see raptors, ducks, herons, grebes, sandpipers, terns and blackbirds. Along the way, the princesses would see something that hadn't been seen for over a century -- the ocean flowing directly into the wetlands.

The princesses were excited to see not just one type of duck, but several different types, from small, "bathtub" sized ducks to large, beautifully colored ducks. Other Big Braves asked the girls what they saw and helped explain it to them. The new Warchief, Grey Muskrat, took cave-paintings with his digital camera.

Had Sachem Talking Bear looked over, he would have seen the Great Blue Heron smiling as we walked back.

May 2006

Greetings from the Mohicans!

A tribe for girls (and their dads)

We had an outing earlier in the month to Color me Mine where the girls thought it would be nice to make Mother’s Day gifts. They had a good time, painting the various dolphins, ponies, flowers etc. and play with one another. (The Masterpieces were probably shown to the Mom’s as soon as each girl got them home).

We also joined the other tribes of the GHV Nation at Fiesta Island in San Diego for a fun filled weekend of camping, boating and general good times. Thanks to the Sioux for putting it together. The girls had a wonderful time with the kayaking, dad powered water bikes, Hobie Cats and taking the dad’s for a pontoon boat ride in the harbor. There was some rain, mostly at night, but a little during the day. This allowed for us to get some pictures of the girls in front of a rainbow. Sea World provided fireworks nightly just for our nation and quite possibly the paying guest at their park. The girls and dads painted the faces to attend the GHV Tribal Meeting (Thanks Rex and Jessica), which was fun for all, and Sea World once again provide fireworks for the occasion. Thanks everyone for the great time.

We’ll be getting together again for a few adventure in May, one of which will be a pier walk at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Greetings from the Mohicans!

A tribe for girls (and their dads)

It’s been awhile since our last newsletter, the girls have gone on some wonderful adventures, a few of which include indoor Rock Wall Climbing, skating at F.V. Skate and a visit to Prehistoric Pets. We also met with the other tribes of the Great Hunting Valley Nation at the Winter Camp, Bowling and the Pinewood Derby.

We got together as a tribe in January and constructed new Coup Sticks for our new members and updated the Coup Sticks of our existing members, it was a good chance for the dads and daughters to work on a project.

We have posted a few pictures from some of these events and will hopefully be posting pictures and updating our site a heap bit more in the future.

October 2005

"Greetings from the Mohicans, a tribe for girls (and their dads)”

We had a great turnout of Mohicans at the Induction Picnic. SEVEN of our new members were inducted as full-fledged members of the GHV Nation (Drew Vandalia; Zoey Berg; Amanda Herrington; Estella Zapata; Lindsey Powley; Jenna Bailey, and Madeline Youngerman). These are all very fun and enthusiastic girls, and it is just great to be able to invite them into our tribe. (Along with Bree Smendowski, another great new member who could not make it).

We had big fun at the Picnic beautifying Princesses and big braves with some "very nice" hair coloring from a can at our "Mohican hair salon", and enjoyed the games and grub provided by all of the other tribes.

In addition to our big influx of new members (largely courtesy of past Chief Rex Rockwell and Sachem Dave Mazure, and also new member Bob Smendowski, who took the initiative to create and distribute a flyer at his girl's school), we have had several new members volunteer to take on important new roles, such as Kevin Matson (Tally Keeper) and Bret Berg (Cave Painter).

Earlier in October, we had a swim and barbecue party at the Pacific Sands Cabana Club which was heap great fun for everyone.

Along with the upcoming Nation bowling event, our November activities will include a snack and craft get together at the clubhouse at Villa Pacificon November 1st. We are also having the girls decide on a community effort that we will undertake as a tribe. There is good chance that it will involve volunteering for those less fortunate in the November-December holiday season.

All in all, we're off to a great year, and as always, it’s great to be a Mohican!

September 2005

Wow, we got back to Catalina and we sure did have fun.  It was not Camp Fox but its great to see other parts of the Island.  It all started on the boat ride out there.  Maybe its because we had not been on the Flyer for sometime, or its was cuz its was a bit windy but there was lots of screeching as we got up to full speed.  Enough lets say to drown out the roar of the twin Cat's that make the Flyer fly.  If the rides more fly..

We got there, and heard the standard chant from the upper deck "Hurry up, Hurry Up!" and got our stuff over to the camp ground.  Everyone seemed to be able to get set up and start the weekend with some fishing or hill climbing and such.  A hike into town for some good chow and then back to camp for a tribal campfire and even a story or two.

The next day was filled with fishing, games, boat rides and fun at the beach.  We had Nation games and got to see each tribe chief in a new light as each one was decorated.  Kind of scary on how some came out but I'm sure no one will be blackmailed into a ransom.

One of the great things about being the Host tribe was that all the food was brought to our camp.  This also gave us a chance to meet other dads and daughters from other tribes and catch up on news from the GHV.

It was a great trip and we as the Host tribe hope all dads and daughters will remember the trip for years to come as a special time.

Can't wait till the next one!

February 2005

The Mighty Mohicans took an interesting trip into the nautical past on the night of February 2nd, in the first of their two regular outings for the month of February, when they visited the "tall ships" being displayed at the Nautical Museum in Newport Beach.

The majority of our ever-growing membership attended (along with moms, brothers and other family members), and everyone enjoyed climbing all around the two tall ships (sailing ships with huge masts). One was a beautiful replica of the Lady Washington,Used in the Movie"Pirates of the Caribbean". She was built to carry cargo in the 1750's, fought in the Revolutionary War (for the good guys) and was the first American ship to sail to the West Coast of North America. The second was a gorgeous private yacht from around the early 1900's.

The year-round, live-aboard staff was a interesting crew. A mix somewhere between real pirates of the 1700's,60's Hippies,80's Punk Rockers with the piercings ala Christina Agullera. They provided great stories and information while dressed in authentic period garb, and the setting on the water near sunset was great.

As usual, we also had great snacks (courtesy of Dancing Eagle(Jessica)and Bald Eagle(Rex Rockwell), our beloved Chief).

The outing stimulated our appetite for the bounty of the sea so much that we made an impromptu move over to Joe's Crab Shack, and enjoyed great food, disco dancing waitresses, and custom-made balloon headdresses, etc. for the Princesses.

All in all, yet another great outing for the Mighty Mohicans: a little learning and adventure, great food, and even greater company among our tightly-knit and up-and-coming tribe!

Noonway from the Mohicans to all the other tribes!
