September 2007 Wahoka Mighty GHV Nation, We had a great turn out at the Summer Campout at Two Harbors Catalina this past weekend with 10 princesses and 7 dads (and 223 other princess campers). A big welcome to our newest members Lance Jackson and his princess, Morgan. The princesses had fun on the boat trip over, and at camp fishing, swimming, kayaking, hiking back and forth to camp, water balloon fights (well not all, ask Riley about that one), and viewing the wildlife (at least six deer decided to spend their nights and part of the morning in the camp of the Mighty Kaw). Games. Games by the Friends of the Kaw, the Mohicans, were good for the Mighty Kaw as we excelled again and counted much coup in the games, with Meghan Colburn (Curley Rainbow) winning second in the ring toss placing several bull eyes (I mean buffalo eyes) in the 20 point ring) while several of our other princesses scored well, but could not quite beat the competition. Curley Rainbow was also on the water fishing many hours with her dad catching the deadly poisonous (well maybe an exaggeration, but it would have really hurt) spotted scorpionfish as well as numerous calico bass and winning a fishing pole in the fishing contest for her efforts. Other princesses catching fish included Blair (Happy Little Chirping Bird), Shelby (Sunshine), Alyssa (Rainbow Sky), and much effort was extended feeding fish by Sheridan (Shamrock), Xandra (Whispering Wind), and Riley (Singing Song Bird). Alyssa (Rainbow Sky) tied for first place in the water balloon toss, but placed second in the tie breaker (her last toss was great, but dad's hands were apparently not cushy enough or she would have been in sole possession of first). Zoe Clevely (Swift Wind) took second in the obstacle course. Besides being fast, Zoe's strategy was to carefully fill the cup with water, put her hand over the top, and walk fast to the receiving bottle, fill carefully. It looked good, but she was just short of filling it so a quick run down to the beach to refill and run like the swift wind to capture second. We missed our other princesses Amy, Lauren, Brittany, Kurisa, and Lily as I know the Kaw would have counted much more coup with their participation. The dads did not do quite as well, but did not embarrass themselves, taking third place in the kayak race. There again the Mighty Kaw excelled in the face of superior numbers using their Great Spirit given Indian stealth and cunning to leave three of the other tribes treading water with kayaks upside down (no!!, we did not cheat). Our most fierce braves led the relay. Chris and Lance cunningly decided that quietly maneuvering to the far outside would have the benefit of not being in the initial melee that follows the pandemonium accompanying launching attempts when the braves are trying to mount their steeds (kayaks) and jostling for position. No less than three kayaks went down in the throes of that struggle. Unfortunately stealth and cunning did not compensate for being too far on the outside and not getting the kayak to go in the right direction, allowing some of the less cunning, but apparently more experienced kayakers to surge ahead. As our remaining young bucks, Gene, Dave, Kurt, and Tarek were off on a hunting party (to bring home the bacon) and Kent, Barry, and Kevin were resting from injuries sustained during other coup counting attempts, the tribe was reduced to using the wise elders as the second part of the relay. Richard of the Minnesota contingent of the tribe and Mike (of really ancient wisdom) managed to get in the kayak and with a little assist went in the right direction. At the mid-point of the relay, with marauding kayakers almost upon them, Richard managed to make a brilliant 180 degree turn and, thereby, staving off any attempts of the beleaguered pursuing kayakers to get back into the race. The Mighty Kaw ended the race in third place out of the eight tribes and resuscitated their reputation that had been previously mired in the mud at Fiesta Island. Nation Camp Fire. At the Nation Camp Fire, a great camp fire burst upon the Nation and much candy was seen to drop from the sky. The medicine man took on all challenges, including a burping challenge, five push ups, and multiple cartwheels and back bridges - Mick did not seem to have the same grace as demonstrated by the princesses with the possible exception of the burping challenge, where he excelled. Several of our princesses were recognized for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the tribe. Sheridan Henderson (Shamrock) received the Level 4 - Sunshine Princess Award, while Meghan Colburn (Curley Rainbow) was honored with the Level 3 - Song Bird Hunter award. First time camper, Morgan Jackson was welcomed into the Nation by the Kaw Chief's daughter Alyssa with the Yellow Feather; she will be awarded the Eagle Black and White feathers at the Induction Ceremony. The girls put on a skit discussing the virtues of always being honorable with Meghan Coleman (Red Wing) and Riley (Singing Song Bird) choreographing the skit, and Morgan and Xandra (Whispering Wind) directing the action. Shelby Harris (Sunshine) and the other girls participated in the event with either speaking or supporting roles. We look forward to many more events this coming year and to the Winter Camp that will be hosted by the Mighty Kaw. A roster with upcoming events will follow this shortly. We hope all will attend the Induction Ceremony to officially welcome Lance and Morgan to the Nation. Please invite anyone that you know, especially friends with kindergarten to fourth grade daughters, to come to this event and share the fun that Alyssa and I have found herein. Noonway Dark Cloud (Mike) and Rainbow Sky (Alyssa)
