Wahoka!

It’s been an active Winter for the Hakowi. In January, we spent an evening at Color Me Mine where the girls made gifts for Mom for Valentine’s Day. It was a fun evening where the girls had a great time and really showed their artistic side.

Winter Camp was a good time. We were a couple weeks too early for the snow, but they had been making plenty at the tubing hill where everyone had a great time either going solo or making a train of tubes. Later that day, back at camp, the nation games were exciting with the ball toss, obstacle course, and Frisbee throw. It was a beautiful setting and a bonding experience for everyone. Thanks to the Kaw for hosting!

The Hakowi had a great showing at the Pinewood Derby. The girls did a wonderful job on the cars and were very excited to see their cars run when it came to race time. Hakowi Princess Little Fawn (Megan Blatt) took 1st Place in the First Grade Most Original Design category. Thank you to the Navajo for putting on a great event.

In February, the Hakowi did a joint outing with the Hopi and did a sleep-over at the Discovery Center. It was fun for the girls (and dads) as everyone got to explore all the hands-on exhibits and each girl got to make an alka-seltzer rocket. The Hakowi girls dominated on the virtual volley ball court and as always, the pin-wall was a hit.

In March, we visited Brewbakers where the girls got to make and bottle their own private-labeled Hakowi root beer. They also made (and ate) their own giant pretzels.

We’re looking forward to another active and fun-filled Spring kicked off by the Spring Camp on Fiesta Island in San Diego!

It's been a great Fall season for the Hakowi. The Catalina camping trip was awesome as always! The spirits blessed us with good weather, good food and good times. Many activities during the day - swimming, rock climbing, and games; and warm fires at night. Thanks to the Hopi for sharing stories on Saturday night.

In October, we had our annual outing to the Pumpkin Patch. We make this a family event and this year we combined with the Blackfoot tribe of the Indian Guides. This is always a hit as the kids take advantage of the rides, petting zoo, face painting, and all the other interesting activities beyond the basic pumpkin selection.

At the Induction Picnic, we had a great time with the bounce houses, and all the food and activities hosted by our fellow tribes. More importantly, we officially recognized three new Princesses - Gracie Kim (Rainbow Butterfly), Hailey Wolf (Princess Feather Wolf), and Megan Blatt (Little Fawn).

The Aquarium Sleepover was a big hit. The girls (and dads) had an awesome time exploring all the aquarium galleries after hours with the whole place to ourselves. There was much to see, learn and experience. The interactive treasure hunt was a great idea to really get into each of the galleries and learn some of the detail rather than breezing right through everything. Sleeping literally up against the glass tanks was quite an experience and waking up (early) to the colorful fish and sea turtles of the Tropical Pacific gallery was unforgettable. Thanks again to the Hopi for hosting.

We look forward to Thanksgiving when we remember the impact of the American Indian on this great holiday! And we look forward to a fun-filled Winter season!

Wahoka!

The last few months have provided many good times for the Hakowi Princesses and their Braves. The Father/Daughter dance in June was a huge success. Dad’s and daughters danced the evening away to some groovin’ tunes and everyone had a great time. The DJ kept the girls going with favorites like the limbo, the macharaina, and of course, the YMCA.

Later in June we had a pool party meeting at the Hersh teepee, a.k.a. “16 Palms”. The girls slid, dove and swam until they’d worked up a good appetite for some caramelized bananas! The circle talk was held appropriately around the fire pit.

The Fourth of July Parade was a blast! The girls and dad’s had a great time taking part in the parade and showing their Indian Princess pride!

Later in July, the tribe got together to say goodbye to the Balboa Fun Zone, as the rumor is many of the rides are being shut down in September. We took the ferry over for perhaps one last visit to some of those rides that have been staples for so many years. It was a fun afternoon for both girls and dads!

In August we ended the summer with a Beach Blanket Bonfire at the beach. We cooked hotdogs, roasted s’mores and told stories well into the evening, reminiscing about the great year we’d had and looking forward to the exciting year ahead!

Our younger princesses showed up for Pinewood Derby last Sunday. Two of our girls were first-time racers and were excited about the event. A mom came to cheer as well (See photo: mom's standing in front of one of our camera-shy princesses!) Little Swan completely designed, made one cut (with dad's help), screwed in a wheel and painted her car!!!! See orange car in photo.

Next up root beer and pretzel making in a couple weeks!

The Hakowi tribe has been busy. As you can see from the first photo, our famous "snackcraft" is always a hit with the girls and the dads. If you look closely, you may see a young Blackfoot brother sneaking a tasty treat! At the Induction picnic, our girls showed their skills at frisbee toss. See our newest in the front at the induction ceremony. The kids ran and hid so much at the pumpkin patch we don't even have photos!
